There are people in the country who who different views on my bullet point 2 above fozzy. I believe immigrants are good for the country and I welcome them. But not everyone does.

So for whatever reason the "debates" on immigration that you say are happening aren't getting through to a sizeable number of people (no, I don't have stats, just anecdotal in my acquaintances and the exaggerated impact of the rioting few, yes, I admit).

I think we need to do better on the debate. Or even just a flipping ad campaign or charm offensive of some sort. Why do some people feel so uncomfortable about a minority who look or sound a bit different to them? I don't get it. But we need to do more to confront it, imho.

If people are **really** believing that they haven't had their views on immigration heard and that there hasn't been debate after debate after debate over the past decade or more (hello...Brexit anyone?) on the subject, then either:
(a) they aren't paying attention
(b) they are prejudiced or biased* in some way
(c) they aren't getting their way because more people disagree with them (see BEIS study)
(d) they are getting news from a echo chambers online that focus on this subject with substantial misinformation and disinformation (if you want an example, go look at Matt Goodwin's twitter feed - not just his gibberish, but also the replies)
(e) they have massively unrealistic expectations of how they think the country should/can be run.

or some combination of the above.

*I don't just mean racist here - they may have one or more of many implicit or explicit bias and prejudices (in the end we all do have them to a greater or lesser degree - including myself!)

It is a fundamental problem with the RW that if they lose the (intellectual) argument, they always have the fallback position of thuggery and violence.

(Not saying that LW uprisings are always non-violent of course, but there's an argument that violent overthrown of oppression has often maintained a moral legitimacy)

Larkim - There is no distinction between the far left and far right in this regard.

The resort to thuggish violence when they lose the arguments (often made in bad faith) should be opposed no matter their political leanings.

Rioting has no place in a modern society with a system with fair policing and judicial systems

Which is why one of the major criticisms from the hard right has been to criticise the policing of the riots and make bad faith arguments in this area.

I saw a video of a guy saying I can’t be a doctor because of the immigrants.

The interviewer was engaging with him. Turns out the bloke left school in year 9.

Yeah, but it’s the principle innit.

Sometimes there is no engaging. They’re just thick, racist, wrong uns.

There is no reasoning, no educating them, no trying to understand their grievances.

Unless I’m being stupid fozzy show me the far left riots that have caused millions of pounds of damage and tried to burn people in their homes.
