Ignoring the situation in Gaza? huffingtonpost.co.uk theguardian.com bbc.com As with the situation in Ukraine where some were calling for the UK to magically end the war immediately, I see we are also asking for a magical end to the conflict in Gaza too. Hmm. Brexiter thinking there. |

If you think the UK can somehow magically force the Israeli government to end its occupation in Gaza, then I have some magical beans, a Unicorn and a hard Brexit solution that means we can have exactly the same trading relationship as when we were in the EU, with none of the political tradeoffs. And no, I don't think the US could magically force Israel government to stop either. Despite what some think. Hamas knew that it would provoke precisely this situation - it's what they wanted. And the Israeli government isn't going to stop because then they're into the very difficult "what happens next situation" *and* having to answer questions about how the attack last October got past Israeli intelligence on their watch. I don't know what you are expecting the UK government to do to end the situation? |

Totally agree with you @rf_fozzy And I just wonder how many of the people criticising the UK Labour government are still supporting companies that fund the Israeli's? |

If you mean me, I've just bought some shares in arms manufacturers. It seemed the patriotic thing to do.

I don't expect the UK government to magically stop the Israeli genocide in Gaza. I would, however, very much like them to publish the legal advice given to the previous government about the legality of arms sales, then ban any arms sales to Israel, reinstate funding for UNRWA (which they seem to be doing) and recognise Palestine as a state at the UN (which seems to be said in a roundabout way in their manifesto). |

Arms sales to foreign countries is an interesting conundrum. They’re obviously not buying them for show but once we’ve sold them can we really expect them to only use them against a country/territory that we say is ok?

Once we've sold them, sure, it's tricky! But I think we can explicitly not allow them to be sold to countries who the International Criminal Court says is committing plausible genocide, and the International Court of Justice says is an apartheid state.
