Should blocking the M25 be permissible? Obviously not, or every fruitcake would be at it without fear of sanction. The conclusion following on from that should surely be that to do so requires some sort of sanction under the law. So here we are. Personally I think 5 years is quite "toppy", but I'm not a judge and I wasn't there. Conducting your own defence? Hmmm... Pissing off the judge? Never a smart idea. Disruption outside the courtroom? Ditto. Any failure to admit responsibility, remorse or intent to reform? Aggravating factors. I can't help but think that these are also exemplary sentences in some sense and I cite Voltaire: "The English feel obliged to hang an admiral every now and then: to encourage the others." I suspect it will go to appeal anyway. |

Some of the election polling showed broad agreement with green policies - I reckon people can see that more solar and windfarms are a no-brainer when it comes to leaving more oil in the ground and better energy security. The likes of the Tories having an effective ban on onshore windfarms (overturned already by Labour) is one of the obvious disconnects between the broader will of the people and the games politicians play when in power. |

Agree with that simbil, but that has been brought about by a change of government, and not because of the protests.

@paulcook , yes, civil, but perhaps a precursor to civil unrest.

I observe that JSO are explicitly claiming on their website: “We have a new Government and they have committed to enacting Just Stop Oil’s original demand for no new oil, gas or coal projects. This is a welcome step in the right direction, but the science is abundantly clear that this is not enough to protect our families and communities from the worst effects of climate breakdown. That’s why Just Stop Oil will be acting with other groups internationally, taking action at sites of key importance to the fossil fuel economy, in order to demand our governments commit to an international, legally binding treaty to end the extraction and burning of oil gas and coal by 2030.” Posted without comment! |

Oh bollocks to it. Another black mark for Starmer and his bloody Tory agenda. |

Cheg wrote: It isn't just the funding. You see the kick back on the congestion charges in London. Or the push back of the electric car goals. People. Voters and government aren't prepared to pay the cost. Governments are happy to pay for bombs and missiles and increase defence spending to cause more wars, wars which are entirely due to scarcity of resources caused by climate change What is wrong with congestion charges. Air quality is terrible in London, the charges should be far higher to discourage car ownership in the city with the best public transport in the country. Better still a flat out an on private vehicles |

The left of Labour regard Starmer as a Red Tory, while the right of the Tories regard him as a Marxist (and regard the rest of their party as socialists). Funny, eh?
