I don't think you've been following the story well if you think it's not about meaningful decline having already happened. That's the story and that's what's cutting through.

Harsh! What I've seen / read is that the issue is that there is a public perception of decline. Maybe I'm underplaying some of the internal reports about him losing focus in the evening etc. But they are equally backed up by regular reports of how sharp and focussed he is, even if he has had the odd lapse whilst in front of a camera etc. If the Dems really want to sink him and get a new candidate in, they'd need to be leaking constantly reports about him making behind the scenes gaffes and errors to force the position. That's not (yet) been the tack they've taken, or at least not with any ferocity. |

I missed that you said there's a perception he's declined but I don't see how you can then say there's no real sense/ feeling he has declined. The two are one and the same. I don't know whether the democrat inner circle truly believe he's declined but they're reacting to the perception he's declined and clearly don't feel they can change that. Every error he makes adds to the perception (fairly or unfairly) |

There is no logic to Biden's continued efforts to hold on to power. No polling, no nothing. Just a stubborn old man in denial. The minute that debate happened he was dead in the water. He stays, they lose, and lose badly. He goes there is maybe a 20% chance that some young democrat can win, pushing the young, energic vibes. Plus it is just the right thing to do. Biden stumbling on is a shambles. Trump is coming in, Europe is in a deep hole when the US pull great swathes of funding and resources out of Ukraine. The US is in trouble once Trump starts his witch hunt in earnest. Sorry, no good news to report here. |

America is a failed state, a declining power ruled by a paranoid gerontocracy. It has just had a humiliating defeat in Afghanistan, though it retains a huge nuclear arsenal, while its people go hungry. Its core socio-economic doctrine, capitalism, has stopped working except for a tiny elite who rule for their own benefit not for the people What it needs is a revolution and then socialist economic shock therapy. |

Every error he makes adds to the perception (fairly or unfairly) I'm drawing a distinction between the hyperbolic approach that the media would use, and the Trump campaign, to highlight public gaffes playing into the visible and unarguable elements of physical frailty vs someone from within the White House saying "this guy just gets confused and can't handle a 8 hour day". There are a few hints of that going on, which would point to real cognitive frailty, and then gets into JDA's point about the guy not recognising it in himself. So he would need pushing very hard. |

I see Biden now has covid. Is that code for a 'isolated for a few days in closed discussions' and a prepared, or time to agree, a face saving switch?

@larkim any reporting like that makes the democrats look bad themselves given they'd have been privy to what was going on.

I see all the fruit loops at the latest Trump right-wing march were wearing ear diapers.

That was hilarious, sad and disturbing all at once.
