Your constant reminder that Jeremy Corbyn had no plans to abolish the 2 child benefit cap either: theguardian.com and independent.co.uk points at the phrase "Mr Corbyn said the two-child tax credit policy would “increase child poverty” and said he would “redesign” the law if he was elected." It was widely pointed out at the time by the Guardian and if you do a search, I'm pretty sure by me on this forum. Corbyn's manifesto by 2019 was a set of middle class bungs, not a serious attempt to end child poverty. |

Corbyn is not in power. Pressure is applied to those in power.

Or is the point supposed to be if Corbyn wouldn't abolish it there's no point anyone saying it should be abolished?

The main difference between Starmer whose manifesto I take massive issue with and Corbyn's manifesto (that while I agreed with more of it) I still took massive issue with, is some of Starmer's manifesto will get enacted because he actually got elected. Which makes me much better disposed to his government than a hypothetical Corbyn one. The route to ending the 2 child benefit cap, is to argue cogently and persuasively and actually change the minds of enough of the populace, because on this forum it matters not a rat's fucking arse that we all agree it is performative, stupid and cruel. And once we've persuaded enough people (or scared enough mps), then maybe Labour will listen to us. But currently, a majority of people in the UK think it's fine and fair, and I suspect until that shifts in our favour, it doesn't matter who is in charge of Labour as they won't feel the need to do anything about it. The route to change was always 1) kick out the Tories 2) pressure the party most likely and able to end it to do it. And it might be fruitless, I suspect it will be. But until then get signing, because if words here make a difference, there will be 6 million by Saturday. |

Anyone who thinks the majority of labour MPs don't want to scrap the 2 child cap is an idiot, given the clear statements on the record from a significant number of them. Including cabinet members. The issue is one of budget given their self imposed rules. They are going to have to find some money from somewhere though because the rumour is that an annoying on teachers pay is being stalled because the pay review is going to recommend something that would blow schools budgets up. I would guess that there's going to have to be a budget pretty soon and I would suggest there's a decent chance it will go in that budget. |

The two-child cap will not last this parliament term. Its supposed cost is little more than 0.1% of the entire government budget. Not getting rid now is pure political choice. And a cruel one. |

"An annoying on teachers pay" - great bit of (I assume) auto-correction there, Fozzy.
