If you don't know how much your pay has been devalued over time, another comparison is to the median UK wage. Again, looking back doing a like-for-like comparison, then my current pay grade has fallen by something like approximately 15% in comparison to the median wage since 2008. |

Teachers have had it worse. And we wonder why there is a recruitment crisis in that sector. |

You need to get on your bike and look abroad fozzy. We basically doubled our salaries when we went to Japan.

Are you in the same pay grade as you were in 2008?

Do you think, should his company does well, his workers will benefit as much as he does? If he gives them a 5% pay rise, will his also be 5%? Or will it be more? His workers may not do as well as him, but the better the company does the better they will do. If the company struggles there is more likely to be job cuts etc which would be worse for the workers than not getting as big an increase/bonus as the boss. |

I have no desire to live in Japan. Or the US. Living abroad isn't something I was ever particularly bothered about. And I know academia in Germany is less secure than in the UK. |

"Are you in the same pay grade as you were in 2008?" Yes. There is no route for me to be promoted. And I will not get a lectureship position. But it doesn't matter what grade (or spine point) you compare - everything in HE has fallen wrt to median wage. |
