Not posting and running, still here! Absolutely fine to ask, and I too try to tread carefully. Most of those RC positions come out of an absolute respect for life, with a different view of when life begins to some. We hear less about RC opposition to the death penalty (and euthanasia), which puts them on the other side of the debate from right-wing politics in the US. Again I'd say such beliefs are most damaging when allied to state political and legal enforcement, ie Northern Ireland's abortion ban. Regarding attitudes to homosexuality, many denominations (and many individual Christians) have progressed substantially on this, and ironically I'd say that originally Christian oppostion to it was cultural/political, as it was acceptable to Graeco-Roman culture and indeed linked to state religion. Also worth remembering how recently the scientific establishment described it as a disorder. (Not justifying homophobia in any form, just explaining my view of the background.) I completely agree with Larkim's point about football hooligans! |

Back to more earthly matters. It's being reported that Matt Hancock wanted to be the one who chose who got to live, or not during covid. FML |

Following this discussion with interest. Re religious fundamentalism... It may be a coincidence but I've noticed people are more judgemental about other people' choices when they feel distant from the situation and can frame in terms of 'principle'. It change dramatically when, for instance, it is your own child who is facing the difficult choices because it then become about a real person. imo rubber on the road is much more powerful than any theory or sermon. Same applies to Covid. "Let the old folks die" (unless it's my Dad.) |

Greg Hands appealing for candidates via Twitter. They’re now scraping the ground below the barrel.

I'd agree with that Helegant. I am utterly opposed to private medical care "in principle" and will argue the toss. But when a child of mine needs urgent medical care which I think can be expedited by throwing money at a corporation, would I think the same? No, in all probability.

Positive news for the Uk, and proves how the people are less prejudiced than the politicians. Just need to get rid of the politicians and the shady money that funds them theguardian.com |

Would like to hear Labour embracing this and showing how positively supporting immigration is a good thing economically, socially and culturally. Good link, thanks Fields. G

I bumped into my FiL recently who I hadn’t seen for a few years (since my wife, his daughter, died we’d kind of drifted a bit, although still friendly when we do see each other). Anyway, we had a chat, and he paid for a new knee recently, privately. He is very active, loves walking, goes away to Lakes and further afield in Europe a lot, and walks a large amount. But his knee went and it was a 2yr wait at least on NHS. He told me that in his mid-70s he feels he may not have long left and 2 years out of, say, 10 years was a long time so he reluctantly threw money at it to solve it quickly (£10600 he said it was). He was explaining all what he had planned, and said he’d spent 600 days out of the last 3 years in his Motorhome travelling around, and basically it is all centred around walking and exploring, so 2 years out felt a long time to him. This man is Labour through and through. He hates that he felt he needed to do this and knows he’s lucky to be in the position to be able to afford to do it, and knows there are plenty who cannot, which he finds very worrying. Honestly though, if I was in his position, I’d have done the same.

Thanks AJLB for your reply. Not sure that I agree that it is only the twisting of religious tenets by political or other nefarious forces. I think there are some inherent inequalities and inequities in religions, which while they might be exaggerated by factions or extremists for their own ends, could be rectified very quickly by leaders of those religions clarifying that only tolerance and kindness are acceptable, so that no one can claim to be of that religion who is sowing hate and discord.
