But just because you claim to be doing something in the name of your religion, doesn't mean you are. Football hooligans fight each other in the name of their team. We could choose to take the fundamental motivation away (i.e. the football team) but they'd still find something to fight and bicker about. On a less religious note, this thread is hilarious. M&S are apparently in the hands of Israel and trying to denigrate Palestine with their Christmas ad. twitter.com |

I think the moderation of religion comes from society progressing. It's pretty clear that if you read Abrahamic religious texts with a fundamentalist mindset you can 'justify' some things that society wouldn't accept now.

Churchill and other leaders looked at under a modern gaze look different. That’s the way of things.

larkim the Football point is good as I'm sure it has been said that those same fans would go to other sports and not behave that way, so it's about changing the culture of football. That has happened with religion in many ways I think.

Cheg Yes, but that's exactly the point, the texts aren't changing and as a fundamentalist it is the word of God so it must be correct.

I think a Jesus born in the 21st century would be a whole different kind of Jesus. Because enlightenment values didn’t exist in the 1st century, so who knows how his views would have changed in a world of universal suffrage, contraception, human rights and the rise of secularism. Someone should write a book on it.

Agreed, maybe a Jesus born in 21st century would have said actually that isn't a sin rather than just there is forgiveness for sin.

I think one of the biggest harms that the Catholic Church is responsible for is not allowing people to use contraception. Think of all the lives you could save and improve if you didn't force women to have more children than they want.

I would think more Catholics use contraception than don’t tbf. I would think more Catholics use contraception than don’t tbf. A least of the nominal ones & churches are pretty empty these days. |
