Johnson's price on Betfair (for next PM) gone from between 4 and 5 to 240 which all but confirms he's not standing.
But intriguingly, his withdrawal has meant Starmer's price to be next PM has also jumped from between 100 and 200 out to 500.
Clearly there was some doubt that Johnson would be able to win both the leadership contest and actually become PM. Albeit a minor doubt.

Bizarre that Johnson dropped out (with more than 100 votes he says…?!) while I wrote that post Now for the never Rishi lot to declare their interest…
I've seen a few MPs state he had more than 100 nominations. I can kind of understand they're playing games to try garner him the support, but surely it's just make them all look like lying, untrustworthy fools?

Just another item for the list.

From BBC More from Boris Johnson who has just announced he will not stand to return to lead the Conservative party.
He says he is "well placed" to deliver a victory in the 2024 general election.
In his statement outlining his reasons behind the decision, he writes: "Tonight I can confirm that I have cleared the very high hurdle of 102 nominations, including a proposer and a seconder, and I could put my nomination in tomorrow.
"There is a very good chance that I would be successful in the election with Conservative Party members - and that I could indeed be back in Downing Street on Friday.
"But in the course of the last days I have sadly come to the conclusion that this would simply not be the right thing to do. You can't govern effectively unless you have a united party in parliament."

I'm relieved TBH.
Some of his big backers look silly though as currently being reported on the BBC. Zahawi deserves all the egg though.

They can lie about him having 100+ votes here because nobody ever gets to know the actually truth. Even now Johnson has stepped away seemingly confirming the claim so they aren’t held up as lying.
I don’t believe he ever had anywhere near and I don’t believe his story about doing what’s right for the country. He’s a proven serial liar, and you’d be a fool to accept his word tonight.
I do wonder if Sunak has offered him anything, I think it would be toxic to give him a cabinet position but I think Sunak has little hope of electoral success anyway. He will probably get a bounce in the polls but it will be long gone once we get into this winter.

If he didn't have 100 Sunak would have no need to offer anything. I doubt he has but we will see.

I'm taking it with a pinch of salt, but I've seen a few mentions on Twitter of a Mail on Sunday survey, who would you vote for if the was a GE today with XXX as Tory leader.
Johnson was the best result with 26 seat loss Sunak 124 seats
Anyone else was near destruction for the party.
