There's a risk that we overplay that insurrection I think. Given the numbers and the nature of the event it was never going to do too much, as horrendous as a symbol of people (including Trump) trying to overturn democracy. It was so easily and quickly suppressed.

If we have to accept that in four years time there'll be another short period of violence before a new government gets installed, I can live with that if that's the worst that's likely to happen.

At least Obama would be free to run again.

"Overplay" the insurrection? It was the first one in 250 years. Come on!

NewsAgents were saying it was underplayed on some ways the other day. They had weapons in a hotel but for some reason they didn't get used but that was part of the case against them.

Ultimately the insurrection was an attempt to take over one building. Even if they'd managed to occupy that building with all its symbolic importance, it still wasn't going anywhere or going to lead to trump resuming office

I already said it won't succeed twice today, that's different from saying nothing will be tried and people won't be hurt.

The only thing that should be sure is that he can't stand so it's hard to see what an insurrection would be rallying around unless it is for an acolyte.

Pete Hegseth, the former Fox News personality and rightwing commentator who has said women should not serve in combat roles, recommended the military purge generals and faced allegations of sexual assault and alcoholism, has been confirmed as secretary of defense in the Senate by a tie-breaking vote from Vice-president JD Vance.

About par for the course with the Republicans. Even someone so absolutely unsuited to this massively important role is waved through because he's Trumps pick. They are all (bar three who dissented) craven cowards.

A Fox news host in charge of the worlds most powerful military machine. What could possibly go wrong?

"waved through" is a bit of an exaggeration if it took a casting vote from Vance. TBH a different perspective would be that that's the limit of Trump's ability to control things. Albeit that he will be a disaster for US defence leadership.

"The limit" being that he can appoint whatever grossly unsuitable patsy he wants to any post regardless of how critical for the nation and how crass the selection.

That's not really a limit, then, is it?
