If it wasn't Trump (or if we ignore that it is Trump), the concept of a person being able to be elected three times with a functioning (!) democratic system of elections isn't something that is so obscene that it's not worth considering. From over here, it's certainly something that isn't barred (albeit that we don't have a president with the level of executive power that exists in the US). We also tolerate a system where the head of state is determined by genetics so the UK so we're hardly the prime example of how to do things properly!! That final (old) quote in the article is right though:- “This is his MO,” Goldman told reporters at the time. “He will drop in something outlandish, claim he's joking, but then he starts to repeat it more and more, and it starts to become normalized.” Good to see a judge has already thrown out the birthright EO - at least "good to see" in the sense that this is evidence of the system doing what it should in terms of the constitution that currently exists. |

This is my kettle logic: Trump will: Declare that a national emergency makes a new election impossible. Dictator "pro tem". Rig the next election for his successor. Preemptive pardon for himself. Exact a promise for pardon from his successor as a condition for his support. Install several more Trumpy fruitcakes in the Supreme Court. I can't see him giving up power without it being prised from his tiny fingers. It's not just the legal jeopardy he will find himself back in, he genuinely sees himself as The Chosen One now, and if Vlad and Xi can do it, why can't he? Short of him dying, going demented or being impeached (unlikely), we are stuck with him for the foreseeable. |

He is already part-way demented and I don’t think he’ll be in any fit state to rule in 4 years.

Historians say Musk clearly made Nazi salute – but supporter claims he was inspired by Roman greeting adopted by Benito Mussolini. Yeah, 'cos Mussolini was such a nice chap too. He was only "fascist lite" wasn't he! I suppose it's like wearing a t-shirt with a swastika on it, and claiming you're a fan of ancient symbolism. |

@larkim but you have to look at the whole American system and they specifically barred it after it happened, it's not just a random rule. So now the question is why overturn it just so Trump can stand again?

I'm not sure the insurrectionists have the power to get Trump third term by force (they are definitely emboldened by lack of consequences) as the army would surely step in? As for the once great nation, it hasn't always (ever?) been great for all, and those that are against efforts to make it great for all (or at least for diverse groups) are essentially the MAGA faithful that is Trump's base. |

I entirely mistakenly thought FDR overrode it because of the national emergency of World War Two. |
