Just random observations: we appear to be going through lockdown economic hell to control the virus and the US appears to be letting things slide all over the place but our deaths per million pop is pretty much the same as theirs. Also, the govt announced on a saturday (because of the leaks) that lockdown 2 in England would start 4 days later on thursday. Today's record-breaking number of cases is being put down to people going crazy before lockdown took effect. That's sunday, monday, tuesday, wednesday. Which makes me think: 1 If they brought forward the announcement by 2/3 days, did they think to bring the lockdown date forward as well or are they really that thick? Why, for instance, didn't they say on the saturday, "Lockdown starts at midnight tonight"? Or even sunday night? 2 Can we be confident that they won't make the same mistake for lockdown 3? I'm sympathetic to the delay between announcement and implementation/effect. If you remember earlier in the year, the govt announced things to happen immediately/with minimal delay, which meant that the actual legal regulations often appeared *after* the policy was supposed to be in effect (which causes obvious problems) and also causes chaos for any business that does need to close. Whilst some businesses can shut up shop/move to wfh models at the drop of a hat, not all can. The people going crazy before x excuse doesn't necessarily hold much water, because whilst yes, some people might do things like go to get a new waterproof coat before everything shuts (yes, this was me) and so therefore potentially causes interactions that might not have occured *that* particular week, but would instead have happened this coming weekend, I think these are likely to be irrelevant. The "crazy" things you're thinking of (e.g. big house party) were already not allowed, so they were already breaking the law and shouldn't have happened anyway. The bigger issue is that the govt has lost control of the messaging because they've tried campaigning their way through the crisis instead of governing (and they also lost all moral authority after Barnard Castle). |

I think that giving "some" notice is probably sensible but I'm still puzzled as to why Thursday, given a Saturday announcement. My guess is that it was the original day selected - given a Monday announcement - and they didn't have the wit to bring it forward a couple of days. Because obviously any date which included a Friday and/or Saturday's drinking time would be asking for trouble, so Thursday was an obvious candidate. It's another misstep AFAIC.

Well, bear in mind that whenever the announcement, the regs and legal statue only came out last Tuesday, which was then debated in parl on the wed and came into force on the Thur. So perhaps, it could have come forward one day. Except that I suspect the regs weren't finished being written until Monday evening. But I guess the same as you that originally it would have been announced Mon. |

Oh look some deeply unsavoury electoral practices going on I see in Florida. And it's the Republicans wouldn't you know it? What a surprise. They put up 3 shill candidates with the same surnames as the Democrat candidates, did no campaigning, just there on the ballot paper to take votes... and it fucking worked... local10.com How dare they scream fraud, when they basically cheat, lie and steal at every available opportunity. |
