The ambiguity of the final sentence ^ made me grin.

Going back to jda #6256, I am over 65 and my kids are late 20s - so I/we regularly have discussions on Europe. My daughter lives and works in Germany but travels quite a bit with her job, into DACH countries in particular, but also NL; she has real concerns about being able to carry out her role after December 31. Her current plan A is to go for German residency, with plan B being to get an Irish passport (MiL was born in Dublin, and, which was a complete surprise to her, Mrs Macca is therefore automatically an Irish citizen).

And therefore your daughter, under the 'one grandparent' rule.

Damn, 3 out of 4 of my grandparents were from Croydon. The other one was from Hull (I think).
Does being born on St Patrick's day qualify?

Probably good enough to get you into the RoI football team but not a passport 😉

My son has Irish grandparents on his late mother's side. I won't be getting him an Irish passport.

I'm guessing he's not old enough to make that decision himself? What happens if he chooses to later on? Will you stand by that choice?
My children possibly have a rather circuitous claim to German nationality, although it rather depends on the actual status of my wife, who I believe is a dual national but has never actually claimed German nationality. She may well investigate this further in the fullness of time once the dust settles.
My brother in law renounced his German nationality when he was called up to do military service.

My wife's nationality becomes an interesting case in the unlikely event of Scottish independence.
She's Scottish by birth but only lived there for the first few months. Her birth was registered at the time in Balivanich and also in Dortmund, but apart from a year in Braunschweig, four years in Hull and 18 months in Kent, she's spent her entire life in Grimsby. I'd presume she could get Anglowelsh nationality via residence, but with Priti Patel in charge, she could just as easily be put on the first bus back to Hawick.
So at that point she'll have to make a conscious decision as to who she is.
Of course, this is all moot and will never happen.
