We aren't a larger more powerful nation. That's the point. We are a small country that doesn't realise it yet. The only large powerful nations are the USA, China and EU.

We might be a small country but don't forget we're British and have our Empire:

But, but, but, jda, we are British! We gave the world steam power, the industrial revolution, tea, football and cricket. (Okay, quite a few other things too!).

Surely that merits special treatment and consideration? ;-)

Germans are very wary (those with any historical perspective) of Germany putting itself forward as anything. At least, that was true of the generation a bit older than me, and hangover to my generation. The next generation however may resent that, or have forgotten it, so there may be some sense. But it's so closely associated with right-wing extremism that almost no one normal would associate with it. (That's my experience anyway).

Scandics are quietly confident (/ superior!) With good reason - lots of money, natural resources and generally social success locally. They don't need to own the world! And they are competitive internally - Norges slate the Swedes who ridicule the Danes, who laugh at the Finns who are all perplexed by the Laps! But that's more like Scottish v English or Welsh v English or Scottish v Irish, more just banter, I'd say. :-) G

Jda, EU isn't a "nation" yet (as I know you know!) Slightly provocative of you to put it in that list. It's a "power", I'd agree.

I've always been proud of my country. To the extent that I served in it's armed forces. I still think we punch above our weight in a number of areas. In others we have some catching up to do.

My experience in HM Navy was that we were seen as the best and most professional.

However as a nation we've become flabby, lazy and self interested. We're trying to trade on past glories and it isn't good enough.

We're good leaders and organisers. We're good at collaboration.

Really brexit just isn't us....

I was about to post what HappyG said about Germany. He said it better than I would've, though.

jda, I think within the context of Europe, Britain is indeed one of the larger, more powerful nations. But yes, on the world stage it is not, and this is where the Brexiter delusion is most harmful. I just wonder whether there is not a sizeable set of the French population who regard France as a world power, say.
