WS - Also a no confidence vote also doesn't necessarily lead to a general election either. During those 14 days, if another govt can be formed (and the way Johnson has acted, it just might be) then Beckett would be a good choice, dull dependable, hasn't upset the Corbynites, respected enough the Tories wouldn't necessary bolt anyway. They said the Benn act couldn't be passed before prorogation. They were wrong.
I think of the 21 Tories who were sacked, (1 is already a Lib Dem), there is a majority who would back a unity government. Yes I know Soames and Clarke still sit with the Tories and I couldn't see them backing Labour, but MPs like Grieve I'd say will back a unity gov. His bridges are burned, as are Rory Stewart's. And Guto Bebb, Justine Greening are standing down at the next election so nothing to lose. David Gauke has been the arch remainer in this, I think he would also. Harrington, James and Sandbach have been rebelling since before Johnson came to the lectern anyway. So that's 9 already probables/ quite likelys.
As for the second referendum, I'm certain there is a narrow silent Remain majority (look in Lewes where Bollocks to Brexit Lib Dem posters are seeing windows broken, racist graffiti daubed on houses displaying them). I would NEVER display any pro Remain/political affiliation. Fear would keep me silent.
HOWEVER I think the 2nd referendum would become portrayed as "get it done" narrative and we promised the people kind of thing, a sort of "take your medicine" theme, the kind of guff the misty eyed about the war like to dredge up that perversely appeals in this country. And yes it could move back to Leave again.

Yes. The narrative that worries me would be "it should have been the easiest deal in history but those EU bastards wouldn't allow it, and this is why we must get away from them."

Not sure Clarke wouldn't back a unity government. He's gone on record as saying he'd lead one. His chance for a last hurrah and perhaps even finally making it through the door of no 10.

You're right FR, in fact he's on record actively saying he would back a Corbyn govt, so make that 10 already!

Who elected Dominic Cummings to advise the PM? Is it democratic to have an unelected personnel helping to create decisions for the PM that influences "the people"? Is this the role of his cabinet?

He must have been elected, I assume, because it's unthinkable that Leavers would be happy with someone having such an influence without having been directly elected.

It makes me laugh how hypocritical politicians are. it wasn't so long ago when the tories were complaining about the influence of Alistair Campbell and the "sofa cabinet". They blasted against the spin doctor culture and the propensity to "when in trouble, don’t admit error; don’t accept responsibility: instead, blame someone else." Sound familiar?

How's progress looking on a caretaker government?
I presume Ms Acuri's alleged affair with Johnson, and her receipt of £126,000 of funding for her "businesses" won't taint the BJ brand any more than Stormy Daniels has affected Trump?
It should be like shooting fish in a barrel for the opposition to turn over these lying, elitist tory politicians, but it seems beyond their ability. Grrr.

From what I read the SNP are keen on a caretaker government, they'll even support Corbyn. Strangely the Lib Dems aren't pushing too hard for it, they're the ones who would suffer the most in a new GE if Boris somehow manages to get a withdrawal before the election.
The Acuri allegations have been dismissed as "politically motivated", ......well yes, but they may actually be true and he has broken more rules. I wonder if there's any more of Boris's girlfriends who may come forward with further stories of impropriety once the election is called.
