Chris, the law here says otherwise after 14 days of not being able to form a government. Dissolution automatically follows for a GE.

...unless you meant that a GE wouldn't be called for under the Fixed Term Parliament rules.

Yep - I'd agree , I did say "an attempt". If they form a unity gov, then there doesn't have to be a general election, and in Italy it looked like one was totally inevitable, and they have a more fractured political landscape than we do.
In other news - Brexit Party turn on the Tories... Farage's comment:
"The calling of a Queen's Speech and prorogation is the worst political decision ever. Dominic Cummings must go."

Take. Back. Control.
What's not to like about that? British laws for British people.

If parliament resumes, won't BJ just try and bring a tweaked WA and 10-20 Labour Leavers vote for it and we're oot?!

Despite all of the difficulties in bringing the parties together, I still think a caretaker govt is feasible if all parties to it sign up to a limited scope operation - i.e. we agree to act as a govt of national unity, and we will do these x things only:- - by XX/XX/2019 ask for an extension in order to hold a general election - seek to get approved an order of the house under the FTPA - (anything else required?)
A bit like a confidence and supply arrangement, a binding agreement to do "something" with an overall parliamentary majority would pass muster, and the queen would have to accept it.

I don't think anyone could rule out de Pfeffel bringing a tweaked WA before parliament, although the fact that no such thing has been agreed with EU yet might hinder a less self confident PM.

Corbyn has told an interviewer last night he could allow someone else to be "caretaker prime minister" in a unity government in the event of a VONC.
