Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I have no time for Bojo and certainly wont vote Tory, but I suspect many leaders in the rest of the EU would not agree with the treatment he got (deserved or otherwise) in Luxembourg. True friends and diplomats should rise above that - Bojo's actions and words spoke for themselves and didnt need mocking as he was already doing a good job of showing exactly what he was about without anyone poking fun. Any world leader should be treated with patience and respect when they visit foreign countries whether it be Trump, Putin, Bojo, or whoever. If you humiliate you alienate. In this case it also plays into the hands of Mail/Express readers.

According to this article, the EU are so irritated by the UK that they just want us to go. What if no extension is offered? We are all assuming that it will be, but nothing is certain.

If BJ wants to be treated like a Statesman then he needs to start behaving like one. At the very least he should have turned up and tried to engage. He humiliated himself by running away. If he want's to be on the world stage then he has to expect the odd rotten egg.

I think what the Luxembourg PM had to say was indicative of how EU leaders feel. It's put up or shut up time.

The EU can still afford to play the long game. If the UK chooses to leave, that's one thing, but actually pushing us out (especially when parliament has repeatedly rejected that) would be a very big step for then to take. Especially with a collapsing govt and general election on the cards.

EU leaders need to play to the emotions of their own electorates too, it’s not all about us.
Nothing has changed technically about the EU position - they want stability and won’t push us out or do anything wildly destabilising.

I agree jda that the EU don't want to push us out but Boris seems to be egging them on to do it. That would be the best outcome for him i.e. "I delivered what I promised" and being able to blame the EU for the lack of a deal.

I don't watch much TV, but from radio and newspaper coverage, I don't see what was so bad about Lux PM's treatment of Johnson. They had a meeting and discussion, Lux PM didn't like much of what he heard, press conference after just to say "We had chats" and Johnson cried off because of noisy protestors, leaving Lux PM standing alone. Hard not to say something a bit negative in that position?

Anyhoo, I agree, EU likely to do everything they can to support UK in finding some co-ordinated way out (or even to remain) so will allow extension. But they've got their own public to speak to, who are no doubt thinking "Just let the UK twits go. Get it over with." Which you can sympathise with, but is as short sighted and narrow minded as the Brexit Leavers wanting UK to "Just get it done." Leaving doesn't end things, it just starts them.

I'm still keeping fingers crossed for Remain, Revoke, Cancel. But more letters in Metro (from people who can read and write) saying "how can they [e.g. Lib Dems] cancel Brexit. We voted for it. We won. Betrayal etc.". Grrr. :-) G

Maybe it would suit the EU for us to leave, at least for a short time. Then we rejoin on different terms, Euro, Schengen, no rebate etc and sign up to being truly European rather than half-assed.
