Pre-Covid we regularly used to get over 500, these days we're usually a little under 300 (last Sunday notwithstanding). I don't think we've ever needed more than one funnel manager (who often does double duty as number checker), but that may be partly down to the way our funnel is constructed, which makes like tricky for funnel duckers.

Similar situation occurs at one of our locals on β€˜pacing days’ the event struggles to fill non running roles until the last moment but always has a lot of pacers.

My local parkrun now does a shout out on social media for pacers only when the normal roster is filled

We've got a fence on one side of our funnel so I suppose that does make it easier to patrol to avoid duckers.

Its not so much funnel duckers that is an issue, its keeping moving and keeping in order. Last week I had loads who stopped bang on the line and others who kept going and I had to get them into the right place.

This included one who stopped and asked the timer for his time and another who wanted her barcode scanned

Southall looks more complicated on paper than it is in reality, so you should be fine. It's well marshalled.

I'm not asking for parkwalkers at all. I'm not a fan of pacers for the same reason - we get lots of people volunteering for those roles where they are basically gong to do what they would have done anyway, and get a credit for it (I know some pacers do actually run slower than normal, etc., but a lot of ours run at almost their usual times, and we even had one who asked to do a certain time, we already had someone in that slit so we offered her 5-10 minute slower instead but she refused as she didn't want to run that slow!)

Come to Stonhaven tomorrow if you want encouragement at the top of the 'non' hill. I've even persuaded one of my bosses and her daughter that it's the best place to be πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ‘πŸ‘

I'm accidentally heading to somewhere with pacers today. The couple of times I've paced, it's been comfortably slower than I could have run. It seems nonsensical to pace your "normal" time, because on the day you might not manage it, then you've let people down. Not that anyone could criticise you in such a case, heaven forfend ;-)
