When was there a restriction on exercise?

Only letting people go out with one other person, and in Wales you couldn't even do that until the end of January and then only with someone who lived within walking distance. I think they only made that concession because women complained about not wanting to exercise on their own in the dark. During the first lockdown it wasn't so bad because the clocks had gone forward and there was plenty of daylight (though I don't like running on my own, it's such a slog).

"There is no situation, there is no age and no condition where exercise is not a good thing...So anything that can be done to encourage – and to allow – people to take exercise is clearly a good thing.. exercise is one of the best things you can possibly do." Chris Whitty, 2020.

Perhaps sports bodies like England Athletics need to step up to the plate this time and argue a good case why exercise safely is of benefit not hindrance. I know some sports bodies did a better job than others and some sports seemed to start earlier than others especially among junior sport.

Aren't you rather overlooking the fact that in the early days a lot of stuff regarding Covid infection was unknown? I think that you are rewriting history more than a bit.

I don't think so, it was clear really early on (probably around April 2020) that the risk of catching covid was tiny outside (especially the original strain) and that obese people and diabetics were suffering worse outcomes.

BK brighter days ahead
Looking at things from a non running perspective I have noticed a lot of events struggling to maintain a full team of volunteers due to some unfortunately catching Covid.

Situation likely to get stretched more over the next few weeks particularly where events have families covering some of the roles and lose the whole group.

Yeah, I think England Athletics did a bad job in understanding the implications for the disciplines they oversee to be honest. Applied the rules mechanistically rather than genuinely trying to reduce risk and advocate for mitigations, so you got oddities like mens 5k racing being allowed but women's not because it would take over 15 minutes!

Parkrun at least tried to commission some research although the blanket policy position and inflexibility wasnt great either. Lack of nuance has been a bit of a feature of covid responses generally -I get that it makes the rules clearer but depressing to see it coming back with the Wales restrictions, even though we are 2 years in!

I think for me that sums it up extremely well. An excellent and balanced post.

I think we should bear in mind that both the state of the pandemic AND the extend of our understanding of the virus have changed a lot since the Spring of 2020. Criticising past decisions based on present knowledge is unreasonable (and bear in mind some of what we now know wasn’t only unknown, it was actually untrue of different variants that were dominant last year).

There seems to be an assumption in some posts above that neither parkrun nor the various governments in the UK have learned anything from the experience of the past two years. I don’t think that’s a given, to put it at its mildest.

I'm not criticising parkrun really, like some others I found the purist approach to return maybe a bit counterproductive but equally I understand that too many changes to the way of operating and it's not parkrun any more.

I have a long list of criticisms for England Athletics and the various governments but I imagine it's rarer to find someone who doesn't at this stage!

The good news is that junior parkrun can continue in Wales, anyway.

To be honest that’s bending the rules really, as you aren’t allowed spectators and that’s exactly what the parents will be. I’m not saying it should be stopped just the rules are bonkers.
