Fragile Do Not Bend
Is it something about men’s running gear that they don’t have pockets? All my running leggings and shorts have a zip pocket for my phone.

Depends
my Nike shorts have actual pockets, the ones i got from Wiggle (forget what brand) only have a small pocket big enough for my keys around the back. hard enough sticking my work pass in there let alone a iphone.

Key pockets just don't hold the phone steady. That's just annoying unless you have a tiny phone. The leg pocket on the inner lycra-type material, just keeps it fixed to your leg. I don't even notice it's there when I run.
Yeah, running with a phone isn't for everyone and it shouldn't be imposed on people I feel.

I don't quite get your point about numbers pinned to the back, to be honest, TS!

I don't think anyone has suggested getting rid of paper barcodes in place of phone though. Just as an addition.

If you point is, TS, that you don't want to look like the type of runner that believes headphones / water in the hand / phone on the arm are obligatory running paraphernalia, I'd say the discrete flipbelt approach to carrying a phone would be an answer which allows both you to "look like a proper runner" (if that's the point) as well as being able to have a phone on you without any impact on your sartorial choices.
It is so discrete and unnoticeable that I can honestly say I wouldn't be able to tell if I had it on or not, and neither would anyone else. I actually don't use it most of the time (I probably should as the security aspect of being able to phone home in the event of incident is something that I should take more care of), but I invariably carry it on races because I am likely to be on a limit and the risk of injury (or unexpectedly wanting to stop and need picking up!)

If men all wanted to carry phones around with them when they ran, I suspect the market would soon adapt to offer more useful options.
For safety purposes, I think there's a decent gap between men/women choosing to run with phone on them, which probably grew during lockdown.
I would expect flipbelt sales are maybe 80% ladies, and similar pattern in customer behaviour with shorts/leggings having decent place to store phone.

See, parkrun could simplify things signficantly by having a your barcode number onto a piece of pretex waterproof paper about A5 sized that could be pinned to the front of a t-shirt or running vest....
Can't believe that no-one has thought of this previously....
