Re: LDWA - I thought (although it's entirely possible I'm wrong) that LDWA provided insurance as the NGB. Not sure how permissions work with them either as I'd always assumed that was done on the event level by the organisers given that the events are pretty complicated (i.e. multiple landowners and juristicitions) compared to others - more so than Orienteering, which can be pretty tricky. It's probable that *some* events take the approach that *some* fell races take and don't get full permissions, but I have no proof of this either way, so I may also be wrong on this too. I suspect that most events are taking the low/no risk approach and operating on a "wait and see what the situation is after June 23rd" |

I’m happy with my printed barcode sellotaped into a bit of plastic and carried in the key pocket in my shorts. I really don’t like running with my phone. Half the time the battery drops to zero in cold weather (yes, it’s an ageing iPhone!), so quite apart from all the faffing about to find the code already mentioned, there’d be a real risk that I would be unscannable at the finish! |

I like the idea of having large barcodes. You could then film the finish, and start too if you want the equivalent of chip times, and determine the finish time at your leisure. Have an app that could recognise the barcodes from the film and allow a human to fill in the ones that don't scan well.

Synge: other good thing about the shorts I linked to on the previous page, is that your phone is practically adhered to your leg, so it stays warm too. (no I don't get commission )

Nobody is suggesting not having printed barcodes. All I'm suggesting is that the insistence on having only printed barcodes is a barrier to participation. |

We've had people turn up with A4 sized barcodes before as they printed from their phones without setting the print app up correctly. Meet all the requirements for having a printed barcde. Don't scan on the Opticons, thus causing confusion and delay. |

Sadly it looks like someone has already had this idea: runningimp.co.uk I think that eventually everyone will have to have a timing chip surgically implanted into their skin that can be scanned. Would do for voter ID too (see the politics thread...) |
