We've had loads of DoE volunteers, and have to operate a waiting list. One has carried on volunteering once his required period was done, but virtually all of them have been really nice and responsible seeming kids. They're often a bit too quiet on FM or marshal roles, but that's not a massive issue.

Meglet - Our local events don't seem to have a natural limit. More and more participants squeeze in each week. I have removed myself and know of others who have done the same and gone onto other events only to find that the event we left has continued to grow. Four leave and 10 take their place.

Setup has its atrractions. You get there an hour early, setup by 825am easily and then have a warm up run. I haven't done close-down due to the long wait. One day...

LindsD Richmond Borough Council want to limit Kingston parkrun to 400 participants (most of the parkrun takes place in Richmond borough despite its name). It usually gets 300-350, but I don't see how you'd limit to 400. Only issuing 400 tokens is unfair to people who take longer, and how else would you do it?

Would be interested if there's a recommended way to cope with over subscribed events - other than cancelling them? Sashes, tokens or hand stamps given out to the max number as people arrive? Or other pre race counting of some way?
(or negotiation with the relevant council to find a way to safely increase the limit?)

Any of those options to put a limit on the numbers turning up will not be allowed by parkrun. Any kind of limit and the parkrun would just be cancelled.
Things you could do is restrict parking spaces, charge for parking, open other events nearby, encourage people to tourist to other events nearby, don't allow dogs/ buggies, hold pacer events at other events nearby, have nicer coffee shops at other events nearby.
Gentle persuasion to control the numbers can be used, physical limits cannot.

I think banning dogs would reduce numbers in one respect but boost by snother. I know some faster people who no longer come to parkrun as they now see as not a proper event & too high risk with all the dogs. If we banned dogs we'd lose dog runners but suspect others who avoided may return to parkrun.
Dogs at parkrun is a particular perv of mine. At the outset of parkrun it was sustainable but with more & more people & more dogs I think at a lot it's now just too high risk to have so many runners & dogs in close proximity. They'd never be allowed at races & for all intents & purposes in all but name parkrun is a race vis a vis numbers, timings etc.
