Our ED does 'promote' volunteering regularly and the number of new volunteers is now increasing. We regularly get 550+ but there is a surprisingly large amount who have never volunteered (I forget the actual figure). It's always harder over school holidays to fill the rota but these days, we don't usually have to chase for volunteers on a Thursday or Friday night. Our regular volunteer coordinator is very good at walking around with a printed rota on a clipboard before and after the run, persuading people to committing to volunteer on a certain date. Usually, once they've done it once, they'll do it again.

I've stepped back from volunteering recently because I did wonder that if people see the same volunteers every time, they assume there's no need for them to step up.
When I first started, like Fizz, I tried to do volunteer once for every 10 runs, but you do get sucked in, don't you? I've now done about 70 vols to 200 runs, so feel I've earned a bit of a break.

I’ve volunteered 28 out of 31 runs since Witney became my default parkrun. A lot of those have been as car park marshal which allows me to run as well. I tend to do other roles when broken. We have at least five regular volunteers at Witney who don’t intend ever to run but enjoy being part of the event. I’m curious how widespread this is.

Ah yes, ER. We have at least three of those. And a few who started off never intending to run but have been slowly worn down...

We have a few of those, ER - most notably our very own 'Mrs Doyle' who runs our free refreshments counter (for dogs as well as humans!). She's been at almost every one of our runs and is much loved by all. We also have a few parents or partners or runners who don't want to run but like to come along and support and be useful at the same time.
Do other parkruns have lots of DofE volunteers?

I don't plan to stop at 1:10, that was just my target as I was a late starter with volunteering and probably had over 50 before my first volunteer stint. I would have been closer if weather hadn't intervened on one planned stint

My ratio is kind of the wrong way round. I've run 20 and volunteered 166 lol My plan this year is to run a lot more often.

We had 5 DofE volunteers at one point, which was very helpful. We're down to one remaining now, hoping some more will come forward soon!
