...pre-run spirits.. ;-)

I agree Doogs. We don't as a rule allow charities to do more than hand out flyers to people who've finished their run.

As someone who has asked the RD to mention a charitable aim in the briefing, I was perfectly happy for them to say "And XYZ is happening, they'll have some information leaflets at the end if you want to know some more". (The context was my son with DS was trying to run 3km of the parkrun in 21 minutes for DS awareness day, but wanted to run the 1 lap course backwards so he could hi five as many on the way around as possible for motivation!!)

Fizz :-)
Pre-race charity appeals (involving the collection of cash) are specifically banned by parkrun IIRC. I’ll try and find the link.

The only 2 parkruns I have done hold their briefing on the start line. My recollection is that the briefing is never interrupted and is listened to appropriately and then we are off.

I cannot understand why you would hold a briefing anywhere other than the start line.

The only time I've seen a briefing done anywhere other than the start line is at Nostell on NYD. I think there they do the briefing where the start *normally* is, and then walk everyone down about 400m to the start where the briefing really wouldn't be able to be conducted due to numbers. Works quite well, but if that was a regular thing I'd expect most of the field to just walk themselves to the start whilst the briefing was taking place.

Fizz - the ones I'm thinking of are awareness-raising campaigns, rather than bucket-shaking ones, from memory. The issue was more how drawn-out and disengaging the speeches were. Larkim's approach sounds just right. :)

wimbledon, richmond, tooting, clapham all have different briefing/starts

If the start is on a narrow path then makes sense not to block it whilst the (lengthy...) briefing is taking place.

Skipton fences off a narrow width along the start path while the (thankfully brief) briefing takes place. This also has the nice side-effect that the runners get a little bit of extra space just before the start. I've only done it once or twice since they introduced that.

Bedford's briefing is not at the start. Hauling the equipment to the finish area where the majority of our set-up takes place is far enough.

Ours is not at the start. No one would be able to hear if it was. The RD stands on a bench in an area between the start and finish where we leave our stuff. Usually no one usually goes to the start until the briefing is finished.

I can never hear briefings that take place at the start as I am too far back and too small.
