The pre run briefing is generally quite boring, but I stand and listen to it, out of respect to the person who is delivering it. And you do sometimes get a nice anecdote - plus its nice to clap someones milestone and the volunteers
I warm up prior to the briefing.
As I said - it can be monotonous though!

It's not just a parkrun thing where pre-run briefings are either impossible to hear, boring, or redundant etc I don't think I've attended a race yet where I could guarantee I'd heard the briefing in full, with the exception of very small races. Some participants are just ignorant in any event, but it's very rare that the briefings I have heard have included anything that really has made a difference or wasn't already communicated in pre-race booklets, emails etc.

I aim to get the briefing completed in under two minutes, which I'm pretty sure I achieve on most occasions. I might actually time myself next time

I like larkim's analogy. You ought to be present, and quiet, but frequent runners will switch off.
It is frustrating when the RD feels the need to thank all of the sponsors one by one by name

The one time I was RD at Braunstone, rather than my usual one, we arrived to find a big top had set up in the car park that the run route goes across and only a narrow path around it. I made sure that there was QUIET before mentioning that bit in the briefing.

They thank sponsors???!?! Never heard that at ours. Perhaps they are just off message...

Corby just mention two, I think, Vitality and ANO which I can't remember. Which proves how much I listen!

We're under no obligation to mention the sponsors any more. That trend finished a few years ago.

becca's example is the important one for me - as a runner turning up you can't *know* that there isn't something different/important. If it's a route you're very familiar with you get complacent and don't expect changes. So listen to the briefing just in case. But agree with others - when 99% of the time the briefing is the same as always, it's a challenge to stay engaged with it!
