Three of our five RDs are short and so we move about 50 metres from the start so that they can stand on a bench to see and be seen/heard. The other two of us would prefer to brief at the start line but for consistency go with the majority wish.

As an RD (and ED) my biggest annoyance is runners not arriving in good time to allow the briefing to take place at a sensible time. We haven't been able to start at 9 recently purely because the vast majority of runners are not in place and as a new parkrun with a course that does need careful explanation/condition warnings this makes it very difficult to just send the runners that are there off at 9. I did a couple of weeks ago as I felt the conditions weren't fair on the volunteers. I always keep my briefing as short as possible out of respect for the runners.

As an experienced RD I find runners are nearly all nice people but they are also nearly all turn massively selfish as soon as they get near a timed run.

We've been told the briefing has to start at 9am, not the run, one of the reasons I buzz through it is to try and get going as soon after 9 as possible

starting at 9 would soon ensure that everyone gets there on time, mention it in the briefing.

We had runners complain because we started the briefing at 0850 and the parkrun started at 0900

I think many people now think the pharse parkrun starts at 0900 is the briefing

I remember in the early days at Bramhall Parkrun you'd get at least a dozen maybe more people only just entering the park close to the start after the run had already started. The issue being that if you waited till later, say 9.05, then people would be less fussed about turning up on time in the first place so wouldnt help anyways.

I think not starting the run at 9 is a big mistake, people will just amble up even later. Start the run at 9.00, if they miss it, that is their problem, they won't do it again.

I'm sure there is one which uses the chime of a local clock to start the run...

As you say people will only miss 9am once if you just start it...

Agree, once you start routinely being "late", those who will arrive at the last second will adjust their target arrival time.
