Glad he's been reinstated. It's not an easy call but as an RD I would only DQ a repeat and persistent offender who'd been spoken to previously and who is clearly taking the p!ss. We have had someone do just that. Usually just being spoken to is enough to sort it out.

Wow, have they really done that just on the basis of surnames in the results??

The Facebook post says “crossed the finish line without an obvious adult near them”

I think HQ needs to give specific instructions to event teams on this issue so we are handling it consistently.

It just needs to be interpreted sensibly, the idea is to protect the child; what can possibly happen to a child 8 seconds ahead of a parent at the finish of a parkrun that couldn't happen if the parent was right beside them?

There is the letter of the law, and the spirit of the law. The RD should use the rules judiciously and with the benefit of sound judgement. That doesn't seem to have been the case. Unless the RD had reason to believe that the child was put at risk then nothing should have happened. I get really annoyed at people who apply rules without using any sort of judgement about the situation.

As WW said, the RD announced it at the start, so I wonder if they’d had recent issues (publicly known or otherwise) which has caused that particular event team to want / need to take a more rigorous approach. As daft as it looks from afar, perhaps there is more to it than we are aware of?

Thanks for the support all. All sorted now but still at a bit of a loss on how to handle things in the future. Can I really ask my 8 year old to parkrun and then not run as fast as he can at the end? His mum just needs to get faster I suppose!

Can confirm it was done on surnames. His mum was 2 positions away....
Believe it or not, it was my 101st parkrun today and my 40th at my most local. After all these runs and 10 years of parkrun I ran a near 40s course PB and had forgotten all about it!

WW - on the face of it, that is out of order. Just checking results and DQ any under 11s if there isnt an adult of the same name within a few seconds. I assume if they looked further back they see someone wasnt far away and the look at the results doesnt tell them you were there also.
If they have had a problem in the past with people flouting the rule, it should be those people they are DQing, they should at least speak to a parent before taking that step
That said, well done to them reversing the decision when presented with facts
