Which is why it's important to stay in order between crossing the finish line and collecting the token.

Yes TR. The stopwatches are started at the start and pressed every time a finisher goes over the line. This should correspond with the number of tokens, which is why it is absolutely essential that every finisher takes a token.
This differs from most timed races which rely on a chip when you go over the line.

My marathon total will always be higher though; yearly mara/parkrun ratio is almost 2:1

Having washed relatively clean looking sets of finish tokens and see the colour of the water after I would not want to be wearing them! :)
