To flip subjects, do you remember before you had a fridge? My family got our first fridge when iirc I was six. An Ignis, decent size, with a very small freezer box. I was asking my mother what she did before that, but she was a bit grouchy so I never quite sorted that out.

I don't remember pre-fridge times. My parents and my mum's parents both had a fridge for as long as I can remember. I once took Gran's favourite darning needle from its usual place, wrapped it up in brown paper and hid it at the back of her freezer compartment. No reason that I can remember, maybe she'd committed another blatant act of favouritism involving one of my older cousins or maybe I was just a devil child going through a phase of hiding things. She found it a few weeks later.

Dvorak Good question! We had a meat safe (basically a metal cabinet with little holes in) that was kept in the pantry (stone shelves ... think old farmhouse). Our first fridge had a small freezer area at the top, enough for a packet of fish fingers and a block of ice cream (remember those?). Mum then got a fridge freezer, but not until I was in my late teens. I guess she was used to bottling veg and using 'in season' fruit etc, so didn't rely on the freezer like we do. I doubt there were many frozen 'ready meals' available then ... a packet of Smash or Vesta curries maybe being the equivalent?!

We always had a fridge but my mum was a keen advocate of her pantry. I remember seeing meat safes when I was little, but not in use

I don’t remember not having a fridge at home, but I do remember grandparents homes being fridgeless. Being farms/smallholdings - they had a “dairy” and a “pantry” on the north corner of the house, these had lots of ventilation, tiny shaded windows and stone shelves. These days we store lots of things in the fridge that would be perfectly fine in such a room for most of the year. I remember nana getting her first freezer and being so excited that she could just freeze veg for the winter and not need to bottle or pickle it |

I also recall getting our first fridge. I’d have been about seven. Prior to that all of our groceries that needed to be kept cool were stored in the pantry which was always fairly cool.
