The summer of 76 was wonderful. It seemed to last for ever and ever.

I don't recall ever living in a house without a fridge (most of which having that little ice compartment at the top). I do, however, remember my well-off* great aunt having a huge chest freezer in the garage.

The first time I experienced the modern marvel of a fridge-freezer was the one left behind by the previous owners when I bought my first house in the mid-80s.

*not 'well-off' in absolute terms, but slightly better off than any of my other relatives.

We always had a fridge - we moved into the house Mum & Dad had built just after I was born. Granny had one of those zinx cupboards outside her back door and a little stone cupboard thing under the draining board. It had an indentation on the top for water to help keep the cupboard cool. I think that's where the mild was kept.

I remember getting ice cream out of the freezer, from a bloc... Mum cut slices off and put them between waffles.

The "deep freezer" introduced us to a whole new level of cuisine. Supermousses! Exotic dough frisbee things called "pizza pies"! Triangular fish! And, eventually, broccoli!

Can’t recall not having a fridge, it was having anything in it that was the problem.

We had a gas fridge, it was located in the walk in pantry, which also housed the twin tub washing machine you had to pull out into the kitchen and then attach the hose to the kitchen tap

Purple sprouting broccoli predated the freezer in our house. My dad grew a lot of veg. The freezer meant we had more choice and didn't need to "eat seasonally" as much - ie same veg with the meat amd spuds every day for a month til the glut passed and then on to the next crop.
