The average is low because TB and HIV still kill a lot of young people in South Africa.
As in a large majority of third world countries, the long-term trend is still very good news. The child mortality rate for a black South African baby today is about the same as it was for a baby born in the UK in the 1960s.

I don’t know when to expect a poo stick, but this area on England you get an invite for a colonoscopy around your 55th birthday - at least I did, pre pandemic, husband hasn’t had his yet.

An actual colonoscopy? That seems a bit extreme as a blanket screening activity.

Yup, with a do it yourself enema kit to be used beforehand. Seems it was a scheme brought in in about 2017 but it might not have survived the pandemic

I had a colonoscopy 11 years ago for a different reason. The actual procedure was fine (I was given a mild sedative) but the enemas the evening before and just prior to the colonoscopy were not much fun! It was interesting watching the live images on a screen during the procedure, because I am interested in things like that.
I haven't had an invite for a bowel cancer screening colonoscopy.

I've had several colonoscopies for colitis and can agree that the actual procedure isn't too bad at all (I also found it fascinating to look at my innards on the screen), but the system clear-out the day before was AWFUL. Didn't have an enema, but did have to drink about a gallon of a vile-tasting liquid which is certainly effective at shifting everything very quickly!

My wife’s had a few, as her mother died of bowel cancer. She said some of the drugs were good, especially in Japan.
I kept well out of the way during the previous day’s preparations
