Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

57.5 Degrees of Pain
All our family holidays when I was young were camping - hanging on to a tent pole whilst dad tried to get it down before it went over the cliff at Durness during an August storm was a particular low point.
Camping at Durness... equal parts brave and foolhardy!

We also did most childhood holidays in a tent. Machrihanish was the most memorable weather fail.

I did Northern Scotland in a 2CV and camping on the hillside near Tongue.

I remember it being memorable for the entire level of miserable it was every day !

All our childhood holidays were spent camping. My dad used to follow the sun - so each evening, he sat in the car with engine running to make the light work so he could look at a map whilst listening to the weather forecast. He would announce that we were going to move on every now and then. All hands on deck to dismantle the big frame tent, pack it away then pitch it again at the next site. This would be repeated a few times each holiday.

He always picked a good pitch to camp on, so even though we had many wet holidays (despite trying to avoid the rain) we never got flooded and the tent never blew away, unlike those around us.

I have slightly different memories GM... I remember Dad sitting up through the night holding on to tent poles...
Also I remember getting personally flooded when we pitched on a slight slope and a younger sibling, sleeping upslope from me, peed herself through the night and it all ran down into my sleeping bag....
