Thankyou for all your good wishes, much appreciated. Dunno how I came to have a nasty squamous skin cancer in my ear, of all places. The nurse found several other basal cell carcenomas dotted around my body too, but they're the non life threatening type and will be dealt with later. I just thought they were irritating little spots and largely ignored them. Much as I love the sun I'm not a sun worshipper. Last month in Menorca the majority in our hotel would be lying around the pool all day long like beached whales. After breakfast we'd be out running, walking and exploring the island. There'd be no sun beds left for us when we got back! DT: Yes, I remember meeting you, your wife and the Vizslas at Starbotton. We'd just run down from Buckden Pike and were heading back along the river to Buckden. I believe you still had to go over the tops to Arncliffe, or somewhere. Hope you made it before dark!

I wonder if the ears are more vulnerable as they’re always ‘exposed’ even if the sun isn’t particularly hot?

Men's heads and ears are a common site for sun-related skin cancers.
I'm reminded of my mother, who used to assure me that she wouldn't get skin damage from sun exposure on holiday because she didn't sit in the sun like other people, she went out and walked around. Then again, she's got off quite lightly while I've got quite extensive melasma and three things on my forehead that could be small basal cell carcinomas (I'm still not certain enough to bother the dermatologist).

My grandfather who was a bricklayer and worked outdoors didn’t ever use sun cream had part of his ear removed due to cancer.

Velociraptor: If they are BCC's I'd get them removed as soon as possible. It's a simple operation when they're small, but in time they can grow an extensive root system that makes it much more difficult, painfuland leaves a nasty scar. I had a big one removed from my forehead that required quite a large incision and a lot of cauterising. It wasn't very pleasant sat there with all the blood and stenck of burning flesh! And when the anaesthetic wore off the soreness was unbearable.
