If I trained for a year or so, I think I'd be able to work towards doing a push-up. Just the one, mind, as I have very weedy arms. I can just about hold a plank for a while, but can't then bend my arms.

My ankles, knees and hips seem to stop me doing the getting-down-and-up from the floor thing, they're all very inflexible.

I can get down but not up again...I also used to be able to do full press-ups with no problem, but no longer. I can do the knees variety but they feel too easy at times.

Time spent doing press-ups on your knees would always be better spent doing something else.

I can't do the standing up thing, my feet and ankles are rubbish. In yoga, they all do it and I liken myself getting off the floor to a beached whale.

I did 5000 press-ups last year and haven't done any this year, but I just popped down to the floor and did 10 straight off. I wondered if I could because I think I've got something like tennis elbow in my right arm at the moment which I expect to be around for a long time annoying me.

Gooffee and I were having the sugar sandwich discussion at the TBC the other week and the younger ones looked at us as if we were bonkers. I told them that back in the 60s, if there was nothing else around then that's what you had. I liked it because it was crunchy.

I've improved this year - thanks to Fetch and the insane 5000 challenge - from being able to do four press-ups from my knees to sometimes managing 20 full-length ones. I'm on good course to complete the challenge.

I'm good at press-ups. Nothing genetic, just years of torpedo-room training where push-up bars were the tool of choice. Having inflammatory arthritis has reined me in a bit, but I still manage 100 a day. It's male pride, I hate the idea of moobs.

One of our helicopters had a fault reported that the Chronometer (posh word for clock) had been overwound. The crew chief who is in his late twenties didn’t understand the term “overwound”.

Thank you alpenrose! I thought I'd talked about sugar sandwiches with someone recently, I just couldn't remember who!! :-)
