Hmm. Maybe I should try doing some press-ups. I suspect the number I can currently do is not in fact a very good predictor of my cv health.

I saw a woman who must be in her 50s sit down unhelped by hands or knees on the floor in the gym last week as easily as a cat.

Push-ups were not great for me before I broke my elbow, but now I can only do them the cheat's way, using a Bosu or kneeling

If my longevity was based on my ability to do press ups and sit down/get up unaided I don't think I would still be alive! Think I'll just rely on blood and ECG results

I’m rubbish at press ups even though I can bench press a respectable amount. No idea why this is the case.

I'd be lucky to manage 2 or 3 press ups. However I can get up off the floor unaided by hands or arms. I can do that ait cross legged & arms & stand up thing. I'm very inflexible so have always been surprised I can still manage to do it.

Those tests both seem a bit daft to me. At 66 the floor thing is easy as pie and always has been, press ups are very difficult ... and always have been. Both are dependent on the body type I was born with - a lot of fast twitch muscle but major joints that are only 'just' the right side of hypermobile.

I make a point of always putting on my socks standing on one leg (i.e. not sitting down to do it)

Nice post Diode. I will try that. As an ex-triathlete you’d expect me to be good at that sort of thing. And you’d be sadly disappointed.

Being able to put on my socks standing up is something I use as a recovery benchmark.
I can, at best, bench press two-thirds of my body weight, which is probably about equivalent to doing a full press-up, for five or six reps. But I can do lots of press-ups.
