Can I ask what is probably a ridiculously stupid question please?
There's a popular surf rescue club in Sidmouth which regularly has maybe 20 children and teens on their boards on a Saturday morning. When they are doing their rescue drills they lie on their boards and use their arms to paddle out to the 'casualty'. What intrigues me is as they arm-stroke, their legs are bent at the knee and 'kicking' in the air. Is it simply to stop their legs dragging in the water, off the end of the board? Or is there anther reason? I saw on the local TV news another surf rescue club doing a demo and the young adults in that were doing this same 'air-kicking'. Anyone know why the kicking?

Thanks to ferret’s advice re how to use washing up liquid as anti-fog, I could see the buoys from 100 metres away this time. Amazing improvement! Would have been even better if I’d left long enough for them to dry properly, rather than having to smear the last bits of liquid out, which obviously resulted in smeary lenses. So much better.

Water was colder, though. Just by one degree, according to the board - 21 degrees - but only stayed in for half an hour and in that time got colder than I did in an hour at 22. Makes no sense!

I don't know, LD, but I'll be interested in the answer.
It's a long shot, but does anyone know anything about open water swimming in Amsterdam? I'll be there in a couple of weeks and might take my wetsuit.

sorry LD, i also can't answer your question.
but i too would recommend the goggles combination of baby shampoo (rinsed with warm water and left to dry) as well as dipping them in the water just before the swim as my method of preference for anti fogging

It's the Heron Lake night swim on Monday. I'm ridiculously excited. It's held on full moon night, and everyone gets a glowstick for their zip. There's a big fire and we get a bowl of chilli afterwards. Fab.

Sounds glorious, Linds. There's a night swim at Milton soon. I'm going to be brave.

Fritton do one but it's not until October. Not sure I'll cope with the temperatures by then.

LD: I've been thinking about the paddle board rescuers...I wonder if it's as simple as counter-balancing to get a good strong stroke? Might help their core to have opposite leg working?? Not sure but I was thinking about it when I was swimming today...
Rich: when is the night swim at Milton?
Linds: that sounds lovely.
