Longest open water swim to date yesterday. Instead of starting at the spit and doing an out and back we started at the Alexandra Headlands Surf Club. The intention was to swim 2.5km to Mooloolaba Surf Club but we had only swum 2km by the time we got to Mooloolaba surf club so carried on for another 500m towards the spit. It was quite a different experience because the route (particularly round the headlands) was very exposed. I was quite glad when we were back to swimming parallel to the beach. I did spend some time thinking about sharks and how much they might enjoy munching on pale English flesh. Back in Brisbane now for at least a couple of weeks so probably only swimming in the pool but going out to Enogerra Dam tomorrow with the family for a picnic and a short walk partly to check out whether it might be an option for open water swimming.

New swim distance record this morning (open water or pool). 3km from the spit in just under and hour. The Alex Heads to Mooloolaba 2.5km swim at the Mooloolaba Beach Festival is next week. If the conditions are good I think 45 minutes is a possibility but no more than that.

Nice work, njosmith :-) Too cold here for me to swim yet. If I'm lucky I'll be back in the water in May.

Good luck for your race and let us know how it goes.

Another 2km this morning at Mooloolaba. Very choppy conditions and a bit of swell made for quite a technical swim. Didn't try and go too fast - just concentrating on the right type of stroke for the moment.

I’d like to be going to the lake too, but need to come to terms with the sea, it looked lovely this morning & 2 swimmers were enjoying a skins swim, & others had been in before, wet footprints on the still frosty path ❄️

Good Luck & lovely weather to njosmith luck you’ve put in so much work 💪🏼 It’ll be grand :-)

There were loads of surfers and SUPers out yesterday here and probably will be today too as the sunshine is glorious. Despite having my wetsuit here, I will not be joining them!

There didn't seem to be a thread devoted to open water swimming, so I thought I'd start one.
