I'm really enjoying looking at the old maps with the modern overlay on the ArchiUK site - thanks so much!

Fascinating to see where roads have "moved" a few metres here and there or even completely new ones added to allow for 21st Century requirements (and I remember some of them being done!).

Overlaying the Victorian OS map onto the modern one suddenly explains the rather odd "outline" of the estate I live on now, which in turn explains the road layout within it. (And some of the road names too.) Basically, it follows field boundaries and ditches!

We're up to the Pickering area next week. Due to arthritic Springer Spaniel our walks will be many but shortish, so have bought a 1 month OS premium subscription and will see how that works on my phone rather than buying paper maps. Playing with it so far I like it 🙂

TR, download the data before you come! The OS app seems to be susceptible to poor data signals, and the N York Moors have a few black spots.

There's no signal in Dalby Forest, but the Pickering area seems to have good coverage otherwise (I'm there currently).

Might be worth mentioning (if it hasn't been said already) that you can view OS mapping online using Bing Maps. It's pretty much the only reason to ever use Bing as far as I can tell. You need to use the UK rather than US version and click on the thing that says "Road" in the top right corner and select Ordnance Survey. It's quite handy if you want to send a link to a bit of OS mapping to someone.

I've found that I can do that on my laptop, but can't get to the bing maps on my phone. Are you able to on your phone?

Yes, your phone detects that you're trying to look at a map in the web browser and diverts you into its own map application.

There used to be a bing maps app for Android, but it is no more. A shame. It was really handy for the OS mapping.
