Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

Diogenes, I actually ran two laps of a BMX track, with jumps and everything to map the correct route (https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=19/52.61050/-1.97558).

Nice work on OSM.

We (Aviva, my employer) have a corporate charity partnership deal with the Red Cross, and we're being encouraged to use our volunteering hours to help map (this year) an area of Niger to help humanitarian efforts (if needed) actually get to where they're needed. Apparently a humungous chunk of the globe still doesn't have relaible mapping, so it can be hard to find places, estimate how many people live there, what access i like, and so on.

Basically we get assigned a digital satellite picture, on which we then trace features (roads, watercourses, paths, buildings) onto an overlay - which is then verified and street names/buildings identified etc. by locals.

As well as doing some good, it's actually very soothing and slightly addictive!

That sounds fascinating MMM...I might look that up to be able to use my volunteering hours on something useful.

OSM editing query

I've never edited before, just done a couple of local paths that were missing, nice straightforward, straight paths. I've now got a longer, twistier track thru the forest to add. Do I just have to draw it freehand, or is there any way I can use an accurate Garmin/fetch/strava gps trace ?

Just found there's a "GPS Traces" option where you can upload a GPX file.

Does this just get added to a library of "routes" you can browse in case you're visiting a new area, or can you use part of the route to add missing sections of path, as per my query above ?

on OSM, there might be a better way, but for paths and things I place a node at each point it changes direction by hand and the way between the nodes becomes the path. I use JOSM so I can overlay GPX tracks to follow, but I don't know any way to do it automatically.

I think, that the GPS traces are there for mappers to download and follow when they are mapping. I've not used them myself, so I could be wrong.

For those discovering OSM.

You can put the map data onto devices too. The old GPS for the car ran OSM.
More importantly, our Etrex 30 runs OSM maps with contour data, and kicks into the long grass paid for maps. :-)

I've done a little editing, but not very experienced. You can show the GPS traces layer and follow them while plotting a path, don't think you can convert a trace to a path.
