I would say that has already been done recently - however you do need to be in a prison for that :-). I was also intrigued by your mention of non-publicised non-jail closed events, I guess it has been super-done with them.

Edison - You could - in the way that most events have a test run without that being all over social media - went to one recently with 40 plus runners a full team of volunteers and some supporters. Although my wife was miffed that I didn't tell her the date and time until the week before and only after we had bumped into someone in the supermarket who asked whether we were going

i actually think its a shame that facebook tends to become the default communication channel for parkruns - that's where you really need to go to see if a run is on or not - which is a shame for those who avoid facebook. If the parkrun website / app was better that could be used to post news, such as "it's 8am, I've just done a course inspection, and we're calling it off as it's icy". Currently that's not practical as it tends to involve going home, logging in on a laptop, etc; so the ED resorts to Facebook as the most efficient means of getting the news out quickly as that can easily be done from a phone.

I agree. I try not to use FB and don't use Twitter at all. If i have to cancel, I do it through the webfms. I have also stopped volunteer appeals on FB - folk know we need volunteers every week. If i have enough on a Saturday, grand. If I don't, I'll make adjustments. I won't put out repeated appeals like other nearby events.

edison - wish more EDs/RDs would follow your example. Apart from anything else it means you know where you have to go to get a definitive answer on things.

I complained to the core team at my 'home' run as they were only using social media to advertise special events/cancellations. The last pacing event did get put on their parkrun page, so hopefully my complaints have worked.

I'm afraid it's just the nature of the multi-channel connected world. Our running club a couple of years ago when we updated our website had to also create a Facebook page (I think we did it as an Open / Public Group back then) because a young person had said they couldn't find us "online". When asked if she had searched through Google she said no, she searched in Facebook. To her, Facebook *was* online. So our lovely new website was invisible to her.
I think if you want to reach lots of people you have to use a number of channels. Some people need an email. Some might not even have that, let's be honest. How far do you go?
I may try Loch Leven inaugural this Sat, who I helped with their practice last week. Family permitting! G

Happy G - I am no longer surprised when I interview people for a job when they have no knowledge of the internet and world wide web. Nothing seems to exist now unless it is app based.

We cancel once every year due to a cross country event - and I put it up through webfms - other RDs do the FB announcements - yet still folk show up every year saying they didn't know.
