We also have an annual cancellation due to a concert in our park (which has happened every year for as long as I can remember). We do webfms, Twitter, Facebook, smoke signals and *even* give it a mention in the briefing, and folk *still* show up

Someone complained last year. I asked them had they been at any of the previous 3 weeks runs and they said yes. I then pointed out that it had been announced - they clearly had not been listening. I missed Krakow one morning on account of it being moved to 8:30am - they had it on their website alright, I just couldn't understand Polish. That being said, the numbers 8, 3 and 0 were pretty clear from the post |

That's another one of my pet hates - people who insist on talking through the briefing. if you're not going to have the good manners to listen to the briefing, at least have the manners to take your conversation out of earshot of those who do want to. (may be straying off topic here LOL) |

I stopped it once before because of talking and just told everyone to head to the start. I also, on occasion, hold results back until the evening - typically because I have to go and train - but also to remind folk that we are all volunteers and they can;t just expect, expect, expect

Same here edison: we cancel every year on the same weekend as a local summer fayre as cars are driving into the park, crossing the parkrun course, so it's not safe to run. This year about 30 people apparently turned up and ran anyway, much to the annoyance of the organisers.

Drifting off topic a bit, but a local event here was approved to run at the same time as a music festival was set up. It was all approved, but then the core team started making demands above and beyond their remit and HQ cancelled it on them, for 4 weeks. One of those weeks was due to be its birthday, so the event advertised a birthday freedom run at the normal time. HQ was pretty annoyed about that.

Whaddayamean? You don't go around to everyone's house and tell them it's not on??? Pfft, what kind of service is that? |

You could do that and some folk still wouldn't listen

I have to admit I was caught out once where a parkrun was cancelled due to another event. I did feel a bit stupid, and I did run the distance, but in a different area so I didn't mess up the gymkhana (also not entirely sure what a gymkhana is, it sounds very Enid Blyton)

Replying to Edison "Would there be any way to keep an inaugural completely quiet, i wonder. Say you had a core team in place, but didn't go in for all the social media page stuff, could you have a low-key inaugural without hundreds finding out - is is possible?" It is possible. A recent example is Clapham Common where there were serious concerns over a large inaugural. The trial run was kept very quiet and if I remember right the web presence was kept to zero until Friday evening when the venue homepage was made live. I don't believe there's any technical reason why web presence couldn't be kept to zero until after the inaugural has taken place. That would however be a departure from the current model where HQ want an event to be able to publish results on a Saturday so there would have to be good reason for them to go that far. parkrun.org.uk |
