Ah, soddit, I might as well Buy All The Books now and claim a tax deduction since they're sort of work-relevant. Only Dave McLeod's climbing injury book to spring for now and I'll have enough Happy to lend to anyone who wants to try before they buy. |

My copy of Strength and Conditioning for Endurance Running has landed. The first couple of chapters are as clearly written as anything else that tries to explain their subject matter in an accessible way. Flicking through, there would appear to be a reprehensible number of pages of colour photos of a stretching girl, but I decided beforehand that I'd overlook such things if there were plenty of pages of text. (The Barbell Prescription has photos of stocky old blokes gurning under barbells. The models in NROL4L also look as if they actually lift.) And for those of us of A Certain Age who feel the need to have the menopause mansplained to us and some myths reinforced ... strongerbyscience.com |

Vrap - It's the best running strength book I've seen. I saw a presentation by him which impressed me hence why I got the book. |

My bookshelf definitely needed a book about strength training whose approach to running wasn't, "NOOOOOOOOO! You'll catch SKINNY-FAT and undo all your SWEET GAINZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ and DIE!" Though if you scrape away the surface, most of the weightlifting gurus seem to qualify that advice with, "If you're an experienced/competitive runner who runs because they like running/are good at running, you're not our target population."

I think what appealed to me is that its backed up with some "evidence" in that the author has gone on to do trial level research with middle distance athletes. I'm tempted to buy it now!! Good session for me last night - my squats are comfortable and hoping to increase on them again next week - just making sure form good before we go up. Going to a lifting workshop on Saturday that my trainer is hosting - focus on deadlifts. I have a love/hate relationship with them - she is doing barbell deadlifts which I always struggled with grip and used to use a trap bar instead. Hoping I can get some pointers for barbell so I can try and progress them when I'm in the gym on my own. my commercial gym doesn't have a trap bar. |

Happy to send you my copy to read, LouLou. There's a great deal of content I'm more likely to use for reference than plough through now; very little is about strength training as in lifting (and that's a lot more superficial than in other texts), but there's oodles on plyometrics, drills and stretching, which I may want to know more about at some time, especially if I join a real life running club, but don't feel drawn to at present. I've warmed to the photos. Really good clear pics of exercises being done correctly - and incorrectly. |

A whole workshop on deadlifts, though Another squats session for me last night; even if I get DOMS it won't have set in by this afternoon and should be cleared by the weekend, minimising its impact on my planned runs. I had absolutely no perception of the position of anything below my neck and felt as if my legs were hardly moving, though eL Bee! assured me I was reaching parallel (with my heels up on a wedge, so not really parallel). I'm kicking myself for not having had the sense last summer, when I gave my life over to work for several months, to include three half-hour sessions of lifting a week. I was eating a lot and doing very little other exercise and it might have been my best-ever opportunity for developing strength and big knobbly arms. |

Yes, parallel, V'rap. Your knee to hip was parallel to the floor!

If asked, I'd have guessed, "Maybe managing a 120 degree angle at the knee on the better reps."

Not sure if this is really the correct thread for this (given it’s not lifting as such) but I was very happy on Tuesday at CrossFit to notice that I have gone from not being able to hold myself on the overhead bar to being able to hold on and lift my knees to my chest. I even managed 5 reps of 4 of them. It’s nice to see some progress.
