Post a link to the sets you're considering. Getting a set is a good idea; it's important that the plates fit the bar.

A good starting point would be 8x10kg, 4x5kg, 4x2kg, 4x1kg, 2x0.5kg, assuming an 8kg bar and assuming you're not just doing upper body work. You're likely to find that D will be squatting and deadlifting his own weight very quickly, and if you're not accustomed to lifting you'll need the bar to be light enough for you to work with.

And a squat rack, and a bench, and cuffs that don't require huge grip strength.

Hello.

I've recently started a return to weight training - from January 2017- May 2018 I had gone from doing regular weight training to zero. This was mainly as I had to stop training for a while after I had an ICD fitted (like a pacemaker) after I had a sudden arrhythmia.

I'm now enjoying weight training again and have the confidence to lift heavier though far from what I could do before. I'm p to 40kg back squats today and managing 12.5kg dumbell chest press so may make it to a barbell at some stage.... It's good to see progress and particularly as I can no longer run to race and continue to run for fitness really.

Thought I'd drop back in here and be in awe at the powerlifters and try and share/ pick up pointers!

And for those interested in specific strength & conditioning for runners, I heard Richard Blagrove speak at this year's London Marathon Medicine conference. He has done his PhD looking at this and has a published book. Anyone used it?

NOOOOOOOO! Not another book I need :-O

Will look inside. If it's heavy on science and convincing case histories and light on photos of lithe girls frolicking with coloured elastic bands, I could be tempted :)

V'rap - he did his PhD looking at strength training in young athletes - he spoke a lot about what he would "prescribe" for runners and it was very much a combination of plyometrics/ drills and strength work. I'm sure I took notes .... will look for them! I was interested in his book but never bought it yet. I may have blogged about it in april.

He works with a number of middle distance athletes I think....
