I suppose it also depends where abouts on your shoulders you rest the bar. I tend to rest it more on the upper back (low bar squats I think they’re called) where there’s more muscle for padding.

Cursing that I've been struck down with a lurgy and missing all my training this week, I hope it buggers off by the weekend. :-p

Cor Brig am v. impressed you have genuinely put on muscle. star I wish I could on my back and shoulders (and pecs). I feel I work hard - and am stronger (or at least not weaker as the years go by) but there is no actual evidence.

I have gained 3kg since March and it is all muscle (I think) my body shape has changed quite a bit and all for the better. I used to be a very carbs heavy diet person and now I eat a lot more fat and protein and have more than halved my carb intake. My grumbly insides have liked the change too!

Well that sounds very good in both respects! I'm the opposite in that I've never been a big carbs type (though I love food and have been quite large as well as probably too thin at one time) so I really don't need to eat more protein and fats.

At a loss as to how I can actually put on muscle!

I know you do a lot Sharkie. I have only made gains since lifting heavy (for me) under the watchful eye of my PT. today's squats (not a massive session) consisted of 3 X 12 reps with the 20kg bar to warm up

3 X 10 @ 30kg

3 X 6 @ 35kg

3 X 3 @ 40kg

Then we went and did some hamstring specific work including weighted lunges

More puny weights for me tonight. I added some lower abdominal lying-on-the-floor fuckarounds just out of interest. Harder than I expected; I know where my belly will ache tomorrow.

That's a LOT of squats! Just squats though. Perhaps I should try your session... do you squat deep? Bum to calves? Or just to floor parallel?

Well V-rap I am deeply intrigued as to what 'lower abdominal lying-on-the-floor fuckarounds' could be.

Putting on muscle is pretty hard if you're trying to maintain weight via calorie control or doing quite a few miles. It's one of the many reasons that the fear some runners have gaining weight from lifting is unfounded.

In terms of squatting I'm one for thinking the position of the bar is most important thing in stopping pain as CK2 said. I usually do high bar squats.
