SmallFry (boy age nearly 9) likes to work on binca and do back stitch outlines for things either copied from cross stitch books or by eye copying his fave magazine characters. He needs help with starting and finishing, but he basically does the rest.

I think tank tops are lovely for little boys. Thinking of making a school one for Baby Spinkle as his temperature control is weird and he eats sleeves.

My son has expressed an interest in learning to sew - not just attaching buttons and repairing holes, but actually making stuff out of bits of cloth. He thinks it will be a sought-after skill when civilisation as we know it breaks down. Unfortunately, sewing isn't really my thing, but I'm sure there'll be an appropriate course at his college
This is not a surprise to me. He's a better cook than any of his sisters
My bundle of "soy silk" arrived today. It's chain-weave, which I didn't expect, so it'll be on the droopy side ... er, I mean, it will drape gorgeously. It also smells as if it has been stored somewhere other than in an airtight plastic box. But the seller included a tension swatch she'd made with it, and I think it will make lovely shawls if knitted on big needles, or a very eye-catching tablecloth if knitted on 3.75mm
The Mirasol Lachiwa is lovely and silky and I'd never have guessed it was cotton/linen if I had to do a feely-test. I also made a random purchase of two balls of really ancient slubby cotton/linen which will make nice place-mats
AND AND AND AND AND I will soon have something ready to photograph and post on Ravelry!

Lol @ 'when civilization breaks down'!
My Mum taught me to sew, and was mightily impressed when I could make a simple skirt without a pattern to follow (she always followed a pattern). V'rap, remind me, is your son a mathematical-type? If so, he should be fine with working out how to sew bits of cloth together, and should find it immensely satisfying.

I imagine he will be able to visualise exactly how pieces look together. If he liked jigsaws he needs to quilt.

what colour is the soy silk, vrap? look forward to piccies.
i was hoping to add more photos of my blanket but can't work out how without starting it as a new project! i know htere will be a way but i can't find it!!
i love tank tops on little boys too, spinkle my daughter chose the yarn and it's the sirdar self-fairisle stuff. washes well and not enough wool to be itchy so perfect. but the colours are a bit lighter than i would like but daughter loves it. so as she's nearer jack's age than mine i'll go along with it
she's chosen the same wool but chunky and purple for her other cousin who is an 11yo girl - making her a waistcoat type affair.

My son is not a mathematical type, alas, KK - his autism doesn't have any marketable spin-offs of that variety. He is, however, a jigsaw-fiend and would probably be able to design the most amazing quilts - though he'd have to get over his fine motor dyspraxia to make them
The soy silk is blues, purples and a mustardy yellow. I'd got it into my head that it would be predominantly turquoisy-blues and jade-greens with the yellow - all my favourite colours - so I was a little surprised, but not entirely displeased. The colour repeats are quite short so it'll be interesting seeing how it pans out.
I love tank tops on little boys too. And floppy cardies on little girls
I'm now darning in hundreds of ends on the tea-cosy (it's striped and I didn't want any stranding) before picking up and knitting the edges on the spout-hole and handle-hole and making a pompom for the top
