I haven't worn a shawl since the summer of 1964 and don't have much notion of starting again for a while yet, but I love the look of them and the lacy patterns
It is very, very wrong of me to work locum days, deduct the tax from my earnings, and mentally allocate a percentage for the purpose of buying knitting stuff, isn't it? I should be saving up for a new bicycle instead

lovely shawl, spinkle - your mil is very lucky
i want to do something a bit more lacy all over, i think.
my plans to rest (and knit) this afternoon have been scuppered by darling daughter discovering she has to go and register at her new college this afternoon and there are no buses to get her there in time.
she will pay by helping me clean tomorrow in preparation for my mother's visit. every cloud...

I snatched a couple of minutes to do one row of knitting this afternoon as a stress-reliever, but only because I had no sugar or saturated fat to hand.
I reckon taking those couple of minutes out made me more efficient

here's a question: how did you all learn how to knit and crochet? Did it take you long to learn the simple techniques?
All this knitting talk makes me want to learn....though school starts next week sooooo I'll have some time in 46 weeks.

My granny. I suspect that it will be a oft repeated too. I guess my mum was too busy and didn't have the patience.

OS - I take mine in the staffroom at playtimes and even if I only get a couple of minutes I feel calmer! Sometimes I sit in my classroom and do it and the kids are very very interested in it.

My mum tried teaching me to knit but I never quite got the hang of holding the needles to knit with any degree of speed or efficiency so I don't really like it.
My aunt Phyllis (who wasn't really my aunt but an elderly spinster who had some connection with Mum's side) used to come and stay with us for a fortnight each summer and she taught me crochet, probably when I was about 8 or 9 (?). She also left me her old Singer sewing machine in her will, a 20s or 30s hand model in beautiful condition.

My gran taught me the basics of how to knit, as well as how to do simple sewing and embroidery, when I was very young, but it took years for me to be able to knit tidily. My mum didn't have the patience although she was a good and prolific knitter.
