Hello Sewers - yes Sewers in particular.

I'm considering buying a sewing machine and looking for advice/recommendations.

I'm so old that I learnt on my mum's treadle machine (and hand machine at grammar school!) Later on I did use an electric - but the last time was probably mid 1970s. I was 'reasonably' proficient - made my own clothes (from bought patterns, mainly Vogue, Style and Butterick if I remember correctly) and toys and doll's clothes too.

However this was all a long time ago. I think I just want something fairly basic now. I'm left handed - although this was never a consideration in the past.

Any suggestions, please?

Sharkie I've failed a few people stuff recently about machines. Happy to put all of my info together, but it'll take me a little bit of time. My preference is Janome. I'll stick other bits together for you x

And obvs a lot of it is knitting, crocheting and general craftery rather than sewing machine talk!

I will be interested to see if machines have changed much over the past forty plus years!

And to see just how much I remember. Stuff about invisible zips, facings, collars, NOTCHES! buttonholes, hooks and eyes, cutting on the cross, bias binding etc etc etc all comes back to me watching Sewing Bee. :-)

Sharkie - I second Janome, there’s a good comparison on their website I believe. If you have one available, you can’t beat going into an independent shop and test running their machines - we have a fabulous one in cambridge - sew, knit, craft - which lets you try them out. Might not be possible in the covid era though

The name sounds familiar - were they going in the 70s?
