These are great, Katie, and I'm sure manageable sized chunks of interesting crochet are just what your brain needs at the moment.

I discovered that old shale + a deep garter stitch border = frilliness that would be better suited to a Victorian toddler's petticoat than to a throw, but knitted away at it for several days before convincing myself that it wouldn't block out into a neat rectangle. The yarn is having a little think to itself in a plastic bag and I've started something I can trust to stay flat.

I have crocheted 2 tiny scarves for teddies. The step up to blanketing is a little intimidating "first chain 195" etc. Luckily I haven't even ordered any yarn yet, I can carry on making tiny scarves from my stash!

Top tip for long starting chains. Do an extra couple of chains. If you have any left you can unpick or darn in. It’s better than having one too few. (As well as using markers every 20st or similar)

Having said that, crochet is much easier to fudge than kitting by adding or skipping stitches.

I do hate the first row, I don't chain now though, I do foundation rows. Once you get the hang of them they're a lot better and give a nice edge too.
