A one off 10 min @ r26 when you're fresh and know that's all you need to do is pretty doable. 10 minute at r26 after some other high intensity stuff and knowing there's more to come is a very different picture!

You're going well this month Nellers. Obviously shaken off those niggles and injuries.

Fenners: no, you just have to get the rhythm right. Drive then arms away and pause, then slowly back down the slide to the catch position. It’s about the “drive ratio”, so you should only be driving for about 1/3rd of the time it takes for each stroke. Muttley: I had been until I got struck down by some sort of virus and spent Thursday and Friday under a blanket on the sofa! Back to nearly normal today and I’ve managed 4 x 10 minutes at (yes, Fenners) r18. A bit disjointed but I think whatever it was has passed. |

Oh dear Nellers. I shall keep my mouth shut in future, looks like I jinxed you! Fenners: It is doable but it takes concentration. I find it harder than 20-22 spm but it's a good leg strengthener and fitness improver. Try counting -- and 2,3 -- at the end of the drive before sliding back up to the catch. It might seem disjointed at first but eventually you get the feel for it and the motion becomes smoother. Honest! |

Tried today, never dropped below 21 and that felt awkward, did hit 407w when I drove to the finish

I pause at the end of the drive so I suppose yes, briefly. I find it easier to get a decent drive if I pause and then cast the handle forward and move a bit faster back up to the catch than if I do all that slower.

But if you're having difficulty getting down to that rate, try 20 and then gradually look to do 19. It does eventually fall into place. That said, there's nothing intrinsically wonderful about 18 spm. No harm in doing 20 if that's what works, it's still a slow rate. |
