A lot of it is in the timing of the stroke too. You should spend more time on the recovery than on the drive rather than it being 50/50. That should allow you to put more oomph from your big legs into the drive and recover (the clue is in the name) a bit during the recovery.

After this morning's DNF I revisited the erg and selected a random RowAlong: 7-5-3-1 minutes at ascending stroke rates and paces with the final minute at max pace 30 spm. Felt much better.

That's a good outcome too Muttley. Well done.

Got out there this morning and knocked out that 2 x 20 minute session. A little bit disappointed that the average paces at r22 aren't coming down the way I'd hoped but it's still metres in the bank and it'll come. Weird readings when I shifted the row across from the logbook into Fetch. Apparently I burned 80343 calories so I'm off for a big fry up now. |

30 minutes done in 3-min segments of 2 mins easy 2k+30 or so and 1 min flat out 30 spm 2k-5 if possible, no recoveries. Afterwards I realized that Mr RowAlong had it the other way round, starting with a 1-minute blast. Don't suppose it makes any difference though, still blew out some cobwebs. Just about hit that 2k-5 once I'd wound myself up. Now for a cuppa. |

Thank you Nellers. Very approximately I reckon I was at least 10% more powerful with the same perceived effort. |

Yep, that's quite believable. It's all about making sure that as much of your effort is going into moving the handle as possible, not being wasted on other movement. Well done, Fenners. And well done Muttley. That's sounds a bit spicy! |

I've been enjoying the WODs this week and have rowed for six days on the trot - unusual for me. Tonight I definitely noticed that it felt harder than usual so will probably just do a couple of easy days now. Garmin keeps telling me to rest... Also need to pay the machine a bit of attention; I can't even remember the last time I oiled the chain so will sort that at the weekend & maybe clean the flywheel, assuming I have the right screwdriver heads. |

Definitely sounds like a rest might be the thing, SK, but well done on getting so much rowing done this week. Give yourself a day off the Erg and you'll come back stronger for all that work.

Stumbled across this on YouTube this morning. It's a short "Rowing for Beginners" video designed for CrossFitters who use the rower as part of their workouts. As such it doesn't go into great depth or detail, or expect anyone to be committing to a lot of time doing drills and stroke work but it does cover the basics clearly and concisely. I thought it was worth sharing here for any beginners who happen across the thread, and I'm thinking it might be useful for Fenners-Reborn at the moment perhaps? |
